About EMPOWERInk

Karen’s vision: empowering healing through ink

In 2008, after learning I carried the BRCA2 mutation, I was faced with an 87% lifetime risk of breast cancer and a 44% risk of ovarian cancer.

Knowing that BRCA mutations affect both women and men, I made the proactive decision to undergo a full hysterectomy, oophorectomy, and a risk-reducing double mastectomy.

While my journey included 9 surgeries due to complications and challenges, it also led me to reclaim my body in a powerful way. After complications from reconstruction, I chose to transform my scars with a floral mastectomy tattoo — an experience that brought healing, confidence, and a renewed sense of self.

That moment inspired the creation of EMPOWERink, a nonprofit dedicated to helping breast cancer survivors, previvors, and thrivers reclaim their bodies through the art of mastectomy tattoos.

I also founded The BRCA Sisterhood, an online Facebook peer-support community that has grown to over 10,000 members worldwide, providing education, connection, and support to women facing hereditary cancer risks.

Through EMPOWERink, my mission is to replace isolation with strength, knowledge, and hope — empowering individuals to redefine beauty on their own terms.

With love,
Karen
